Who We Are

Matthew L. Schwartz, Esq.

Matthew practices civil litigation with an emphasis on employment law and business matters. He litigates discrimination, sexual harassment and retaliation matters as well as violations of the Massachusetts Paid Family and Medical Leave Act (PMFLA), the Federal Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA), and the Massachusetts Wage Act. He also negotiates employment separations and advises both employees and employers on severance, non-competition, and non-solicitation agreements. Matthew is licensed to practice in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, the United States District Court – District of Massachusetts, the state of Rhode Island and the United States District Court – District of Rhode Island.

Education and Experience

Matthew earned his juris doctorate at the Boston University School of Law where he graduated in 2017. While attending law school, Matthew was on the Editorial Board of the Review of Banking and Financial Law, the first and one of the country’s leading scholarly banking and financial law journals. During law school Matthew interned at the Securities and Exchange Commission as part of their Summer Honors Program and externed with the U.S. Attorney for the District of Massachusetts in their Financial Litigation Unit.

Prior to entering private practice, Matthew worked as a Special Assistant Attorney General in the Administrative Law Division under Attorney General Maura Healey. Prior to joining Bennett & Belfort, P.C., Matthew worked at boutique litigation firms in Boston where he focused his practice on representing victims of sophisticated financial fraud, including one of the country’s largest Ponzi schemes, as well as general commercial litigation including bankruptcy and receivership matters.

Litigation Highlights
  • Obtained several sizable settlements while representing investors in multi-jurisdictional suit against investment fund administrator, auditors and valuation specialists for claims arising from one of the country’s largest Ponzi schemes.
  • Represented limited partnership in suit against the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China, which was acting as clearing broker for a hedge fund accused of defrauding investors.
  • Part of team tasked with advising Attorney General Maura Healy on the constitutionality of Massachusetts voter referendums such as the millionaire tax and on proposed legislation such as the Death with Dignity bill.
  • Represented Massachusetts in appellate proceedings, defending decisions made by the Department of Transportation and the Department of Children and Families.
  • Represented creditors in Rhode Island receivership and bankruptcy proceedings.
  • Represented and advised financial institutions in breach of contract disputes.
